Silverado Engine Awards

It's no secret that General Motors engineers and manufactures some of the most powerful and reliable engines on the market, but this year their powertrains are really making headlines: one of their engines won a spot on WardAuto's coveted "Wards 10 Best Engines" list.

That beautiful feat of engineering is the 6.2-liter L87 V8, available in the 2019 Chevy Silverado and the 2019 GMC Sierra. WardsAuto curates its top-tier list by sifting through every available engine on the market that's seen significant changes in the last year and is part of a vehicle that costs less than $64,000. A panel of judges than ranks the engines in terms of technology, torque, horsepower, observed fuel consumption, and noisiness.

The engine made the list thanks in large part to its expert application of Dynamic Fuel Management technology. Dynamic Fuel Management is a system designed to decrease fuel consumption without sacrificing performance or turning to a smaller, less powerful engine type. It works by shutting down the cylinders within the engine in response to the specific driving requirements; in essence, when you need all eight cylinders to haul that three-thousand pounder of a boat, you'll have them, but when you're just cruising down the freeway with nothing in tow, your engine intelligently conserves fuel by only activating the necessary cylinders. It's able to function on as low as two cylinders if appropriate; in fact, it runs on 17 distinct cylinder patterns for truly intelligent and in-the-moment fuel management. The Dynamic Fuel Management system evolved naturally from GM's original fuel-economizing system, Active Fuel Management, which was introduced in 2005. Active Fuel Management, while innovative in its time, was only able to fluctuate between four and eight cylinders.

It's no small feat to be named to any of WardsAuto's selective lists, but it is a particular honor for the Silverado and Sierra to earn an accolade in the realms of power and performance that is as prestigious as Wards 10 Best Engines.
